York Central WI were asked by the Manager of the Treasurer’s House to decorate one of the rooms for their traditional Christmas display. I have put together the following information, which hopefully you may be able to include in the next Federation newsletter. I understand that the deadline for submissions for the December issue is 7th December, and I trust that you will have space to include this. If not, perhaps it could go in the issue for January, to say what we have done?
“Display commemorating the achievement of Jane Squire, the English lady mathematician who discovered how to work out longitude.
In 2012, York Central WI started their meetings in The Treasurer’s House, the National Trust property in Ogleforth, York. Having a continuing connection with the house, with one of the dedicated house volunteers being married to our display co-ordinator, we were invited to decorate a room in the house for Christmas. It was decided to make a display commemorating the achievement of Jane Squire, the lady who discovered how to work out longitude.
As well as making scores of numbers for the display, Denise Scott co-ordinated and organised the room set up, The table centre-piece was designed and embroidered by Hannah Smith, and the bed centre-piece was designed and made by Denise. Gill Potts donated the glass beads, and the remainder were supplied by the National Trust. Eight of the York Central ladies went along to assist with setting up the display and the clever stitchers spent a morning stitching the numbers to the fabric.
The Christmas display is open to the public during the winter opening hours of Treasurer’s House, from 15th November until 21st December, Saturday – Wednesday . The usual admission charges will apply. Please check the Treasurer’s House website for details of opening hours.”
