Christmas is fast approaching and the ladies at Hovingham WI decided to make Christmas Wreaths to grace their homes over the Festive Season. Approximately 30 members gathered in Hovingham Village Hall. All were given a wreath ring and wire. Also available were dried orange pieces and cinnamon sticks. Members raided their gardens for evergreen foliage, berries and cones. Add a springle of ribbon and you have all the ingredients for a Yuletide treat to welcome visitors over the Christmas period. Even though a short training film had been circulated beforehand, the level of experience and expertise in the room was variable. Incredible then that 30+ beautiful wreaths left the hall at the end of the night!
To help us to get in the mood, The Harmonettes Choir sang Christmas Carols. At their request, there was a collection for Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa that raised £158.00.
The mince pies and mulled wine were delicious!
We also learned a little about the history of the floral wreath from Pagan to Modern times and how it became associated with the Christian Festival of Christmas.
WI Wreaths will shortly be adorning many front doors in Hovingham and the surrounding villages. Why not look out for them as you pass through?
