The Environmental Day held on Friday 27th march in Riccall Institute was an amazing success.
Forty members attended and were very interested in a variety of speakers. Subjects covered were the development of Charity Shops, and how they are changing their image, making them more appealing in tough times, when money is short.
A lot of work is also being done to improve the image of smaller towns. This encourages people to shop locally and support small businesses.
We were then shown images of little creatures and told how important these are in the ecological chain. If one creature ceases to exist, it affects the ecological chain and can result in an overrun by other creatures.
Good-quality furniture is being repaired and recycled and available to families on low incomes.
Small electrical and mechanical items are being repaired and PAT tested.
A delicious lunch was prepared by Sarah and served before our afternoon session.
At Stockbridge Technology Centre at Cawood, plants are being bred to flourish in different climatic conditions – flood, drought. Instead of using dangerous chemicals to rid greenhouses of pests and diseases natural products are used. Insects are bred for this purpose.
A lot of work into the use and conservation of both water and energy. Greenhouses are vast and very productive, producing tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.
The local MP said he was very encouraged by the way the area was tackling some of the elements of climate change.
There was also a demonstration of making compost in our gardens, and some ladies went home with samples for their gardens.
An excellent day, with many thanks to all who attended and helped in any way.
